SafariSounds: Our Commitment to Nature and Coffee

Our SafariSounds brand is the embodiment of our deep connection and respect for the vibrant environment of Uganda, where Ruth and Amos grew up.

Growing up in the western countryside, surrounded by a kaleidoscope of flowers and a chorus of bird calls on a farm with her grandmother Gogo, Ruth's affinity for nature and particularly birds, was nurtured. Very early, she could see that birds were not only a beautiful part of nature, but also an integral part of a delicate balance, a key participant in supporting that balance.

While in England, Ruth deepened her understanding of birds, learning to identify their diverse calls. This passion was reignited upon her return to Mbigi, where she transformed her farm into a bird's paradise, replete with bathing spots and lush plant life. She spent hours observing these creatures, fascinated by the variety of species and their vivid plumage.

But her keen eye also noticed this balance was in danger, with trees being cut to make room for crops, and birds losing their precious homes.

Ruth dreamed of a coffee brand that had both coffee lovers and birds at its heart. Birds are vital indicators of environmental health, as Rachel's Carson's Seminal work, A Silent Spring, showed.

Good coffee, good life, depends on a healthy bird habitat. Safeguarding Uganda's 1,000 bird species is a mission that The Edge takes seriously through the SafariSounds brand, by upholding practices that benefit both the birds and the coffee quality.

The Edge offers agronomy services to coffee farms, and strongly encourages farmers to plant trees which double up as shade trees for coffee, as well as bird habitats. Even a small increase of trees on farms can boost bird numbers. Birds in turn plant seeds that grow into more trees.

SafariSounds is our open invitation to customers around the world to this journey ('safar' in Swahili) of discovering Uganda's unique bird life through thoughtful consumption of coffee that supports bird life.

Our Collaborative Efforts to Support Birds and Excellent Coffee

Through Rainforest Alliance certified methods, emphasising 'more trees, more birds', SafariSounds not only enhances bird habitats but also the coffee it produces.

Working hand-in-hand with local farmers, SafariSounds focuses on shade-grown coffee and on avoiding the use of harmful chemicals, crucial for attracting birds back to the farms.
